Born Kimberly Denise Jones on July 11, 1975 in Brooklyn, New York, Lil Kim is the world’s first female Grammy winning, multi-platinum selling, hot 100 chart topping, hip hop artist. The Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003), both were certified platinum by the RIAA, making Kim the only female rapper besides Missy Elliott to have at least 3 platinum albums and was the first hip hop artist to work with the VIVA GLAM HIV/AIDS campaign in 2000.
She has worked in various film and television projects to include; “Zoolander” with Ben Stiller, “Juwana Man” with Miguel A. Nunez Jr. and Vivica Fox, “Gang of Roses” with Lisa Raye, “Nora’s Hair Salon” with Jennifer Lewis, “You Got Served” with B2K and “Super Hero The Movie” with Leslie Nielson.
Her previous success was marred on March 17, 2005, when Kim was convicted of three counts of conspiracy and one count of perjury for lying to a Federal grand jury about her and her friends' involvement in a 2001 shooting outside the Hot 97 studios in Manhattan. On March 9, 2006, BET premiered the show Lil Kim: Countdown to Lockdown, which was filmed before Kim headed to prison. The show became the highest rated premiere in BET history, with 1.7 million viewers. In May 2006, Debbie Harry (Blondie) released a Lil' Kim tribute song called "Dirty and Deep" in protest of her conviction. She was released on July 3, 2006, after serving approximately 12 months.
Lil' Kim appeared on the eighth season reality show Dancing with the Stars, which began airing on March 9, 2009. She was paired with professional dancer Derek Hough until the dance couple was eliminated on May 5, 2009, putting her at fifth place from all thirteen contestants that season. Syracuse University thought enough of Lil Kim as a cultural icon to develop a course which asked students to analyze how Lil' Kim's rhymes challenge male chauvinism and homophobia in the rap world, and transcend old standards of sexual politics. Her contributions to the history of hip hop were highlighted in the book titled “There’s A God On The Mic: The 50 Greatest MC’s” by hip hop legend Kool Moe Dee.
